Tesla Model S Suspension Problems and How to Fix Them

Tesla Model S Suspension Problems and How to Fix Them

The Tesla Model S, a luxury electric vehicle produced by Elon Musk's electric automaker, has been the subject of numerous complaints and investigations due to suspension problems. This article will delve into these issues, Tesla's response, and how to address them. The Model S, along with its sibling, the Model X, are luxury vehicles that have set the bar for electric sedans and SUVs in terms of range, performance features, and safety.

What is Tesla Model S?

The Tesla Model S is a luxury electric sedan produced by Tesla, an American electric automaker led by Elon Musk. Known for its impressive range, performance features, and safety, the Model S has set the standard for electric luxury vehicles. However, it has also faced criticism for suspension issues. Despite its high price, the Model S has been praised for its environmental benefits, including zero emissions and excellent fuel economy.

How Does Tesla Model S Suspension Work?

The suspension system of the Tesla Model S is a complex assembly of components including control arms, fore links, ball joints, and bolts. The air suspension system, a key feature of the Model S, adjusts the ride height and speed based on the road situation, enhancing both comfort and efficiency. However, this system can malfunction, leading to various problems. The front tire and wheel are also crucial parts of the suspension system, and any defect or fault in these components can lead to suspension issues.

Do Teslas have suspension problems?

Yes, Tesla vehicles, particularly the Model S, have been reported to have suspension problems. These issues range from premature wear of suspension components to failure of the air suspension system, and have led to investigations by U.S. agencies and recalls in China. In some cases, the wheel arch liner can also be affected by these suspension problems.

Common Suspension Issues in Tesla Model S

Premature Wear of Suspension Components

One common issue in the Tesla Model S is the premature wear of suspension components. This can lead to the vehicle sagging or leaning to one side, and can cause the car to bounce excessively or fail to absorb shocks effectively. In some cases, the control arms, fore links, and ball joints can develop cracks, leading to their failure.

Failure of the Air Suspension System

The air suspension system in the Tesla Model S can fail, leading to a deterioration in ride quality. This can cause the vehicle to bottom out over bumps, sway or lean during turns, and experience poor handling and braking. In some cases, the air suspension system can also cause the vehicle to produce excessive noise.

Loose or Broken Bolts

Loose or broken bolts in the Tesla Model S suspension can lead to a range of problems, including improper wheel alignment, excessive vibration, and noise over bumps. This can disrupt the suspension geometry and cause uneven tire wear. In some cases, these bolts can also affect the strength and specifications of the suspension system.

Issues with the Suspension Control Arm

The suspension control arm in the Tesla Model S can break or wear out, leading to poor steering response, delayed or longer stopping distances, and a stiff ride quality. This can also cause the vehicle to drift or pull during turns. In some cases, the instrument panel can also display warnings related to these suspension issues.

Problems with the Smart Air Suspension System

The Smart Air Suspension System in the Tesla Model S can malfunction, causing the vehicle to tilt during turns, jerk during the ride, and experience excessive bouncing over bumps. This can also lead to the vehicle bottoming out over bumps and experiencing poor handling. In some cases, the system can also cause the vehicle to produce excessive light and sound levels.

Tesla's Response to Suspension Issues

Tesla's Official Statements on Suspension Issues

Tesla has acknowledged the suspension issues in the Model S, stating that they are due to parts that may weaken, seize, or rupture. The company has issued service bulletins and extended the warranty to address these issues. In some cases, the company has also offered monetary compensation to the affected owners.

Tesla's Recall Actions Related to Suspension Problems

In response to the suspension problems, Tesla has initiated recalls, particularly in China. These recalls involve the replacement of faulty suspension parts, including control arms, ball joints, and bolts. In some cases, the recalls have also involved the replacement of the entire suspension system.

How to Address and Fix Tesla Model S Suspension Problems

Addressing and fixing suspension problems in the Tesla Model S involves regular inspection and maintenance, replacement of worn or damaged parts, and adherence to recall actions. Owners experiencing suspension issues should contact Tesla's service centers for assistance. In some cases, the company has also offered deals and discounts to the affected customers. My Tesla has 41k miles on it and my front left lower control arm snapped in two at the wheel. I just can’t believe my cat is such a piece of shit. I baby it as well. I’ve never raced it or did any stupid driving with it. Absolutely bullcrap!!!! I’m hoping and praying that Tesla will goodwill this repair. I know that every other manufacturer would help out since this could’ve been such a serious accident if I’d been traveling down the highway. Any suggestions? Thanks
