Ram 1500 Air Suspension: Everything You Need to Know

Ram 1500 Air Suspension: Everything You Need to Know

Which Models of Ram 1500 Have Air Suspension?

The Ram 1500 is a popular truck known for its strength and durability. One of its coolest features is the optional air suspension system, which is available on certain models. This system, called the Active-Level™ Four-Corner Air Suspension, has been offered since the fourth generation (2013-2018) and continues in the fifth generation (2019-present).

Now, not all Ram 1500 models come with this fancy air suspension system as a standard feature. It's an optional upgrade that you can choose when buying your truck. Be sure to check with your local dealer or look at the truck's options to find out if it has air suspension.

Benefits of Air Suspensions

There are several benefits to having air suspension on your Ram 1500:

  1. Better Ride Quality: Air suspensions are like soft pillows for your truck. They make the ride smoother and more comfortable, even on rough roads.
  2. Adjustable Height: With air suspension, you can raise or lower your truck to make it easier to get in and out, or to help it perform better off-road.
  3. Improved Towing: When you're towing something heavy, air suspension helps keep your truck level and stable, so it's easier to control.
  4. Automatic Load Leveling: The air suspension system adjusts itself to keep your truck level, no matter how much weight you're carrying.

Steps to Replace Air Suspensions on Ram 1500

If you ever need to replace the air suspension on your Ram 1500, it's best to have a professional mechanic do it. But if you're curious about the process, here are the basic steps:

First, you will need to get the components. Aftermarket Ram air suspensions are a great cost-effective option if you are up for the job of replacing it on your own.

When installing new air suspension components on your Ram 1500, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure proper installation and performance. Here's a general overview of the process, but remember to refer to the specific guidelines provided by the component manufacturer:

  1. Inspect the new components: Before installation, check the new air suspension components, such as air springs and the compressor, for any signs of damage or defects.

  2. Prepare the area: Clean the area where the new components will be installed, removing any dirt, debris, or rust. This ensures a secure connection and prevents potential issues down the line.

  3. Position the air springs: Place the new air springs in the designated location on your truck, making sure they align correctly with the mounting points. Some air springs may require brackets or adapters for proper installation. Carefully secure the air springs using the appropriate bolts, nuts, or clamps provided by the manufacturer. Tighten them to the specified torque settings.

  4. Install the air compressor: Locate the designated spot for the compressor, usually near the truck's frame or under the hood. Secure the compressor using the provided mounting brackets and hardware. Connect any necessary electrical wiring, ensuring proper grounding and following the manufacturer's recommendations for fuse protection.

  5. Install air lines and fittings: Route the air lines from the compressor to the air springs, avoiding areas with high heat or sharp edges that could damage the lines. Install the fittings and secure the air lines to the air springs, making sure the connections are tight and leak-free.

  6. Connect the control system: If your air suspension system includes an electronic control system or an air pressure gauge, follow the manufacturer's instructions to connect the wiring and install any necessary switches or controls within the driver's reach.

  7. Double-check your work: Before lowering your truck and testing the new air suspension, inspect all the connections, bolts, and mounts to ensure everything is secure and correctly installed.

  8. Test the new air suspension system: Lower your truck, start the engine, and inflate the air springs to the recommended pressure. Check for any leaks and test the system's performance by driving the truck on various road conditions. Make any necessary adjustments to the air pressure or ride height as needed.

Keep in mind that this is a general outline of the process, and it's essential to follow the specific instructions provided by the air suspension component manufacturer to ensure a successful installation. If you're unsure about any part of the process, it's always best to consult a professional mechanic for assistance.

I like to change my own oil. I just bought a Limited 2020 ram 1500 5.7 hemi crew cab. It has air shocks and I have heard that with my lower ceiling I need to block the air shocks so as it won’t raise the truck into the garage door. Can I receive the step by step instructions from you?
